Every day is filled with curiosity, wonder and new discoveries at our centers. And every day we help our students grow by introducing them to the powers of music, art, literature, science, language and math. These activities all help our students expand their horizons now, while preparing them for the future.


Music

Music is at the heart of the E+D experience, and we believe that children have the right to quality music making experiences each day.

We see children as joyful musicians with incredible powers of concentration. Music deepens children's emotional life, extends their language development and invites playful banter.

At our centers, adults are musical role models, displaying courage and passion as they learn the guitar and share songs with the children.


Art

Art materials provide deeply satisfying, provocative experiences to very young children. They invite young learners to linger and develop devotion to their work. When we allow infants and toddlers to have regular access to art materials, and focus on the process rather than the product, they become self-assured makers who are comfortable with tools and who expect adults to take their work seriously.

At E+D, we believe that children should begin their exploration of art materials as early as possible and that their expressive and cognitive development will soar as a result of these formative experiences. We put a paintbrush in the hands of a six month old wondering what their unique imprint will be.

We engage verbally with a two year old who is painting. We ask about color, notice lines and express curiosity about whatever they have to say. These experiences build upon each other to create a trajectory of artistic development and a lifetime of enjoyment.


Sensory Self

In the first two years of life children are fascinated by the relationship between their bodies and the environment. They gather information about the world through their senses and rely on touching, mouthing, hearing and observing to understand how things work.

At E+D, we encourage sensory exploration by inviting children to engage with "messy" materials such as water, paint, sand and clay every day. We know that these tools boost creativity, provide a soothing encounter and present endless possibilities for discovery.


Moving & Growing

We believe that physical spaces have a profound impact on learning and that children’s physical development is impacted by the environment we create for them. From birth to three, children undergo vast physical changes and Explore+Discover provides myriad opportunities for children to move freely and develop a sense of their physical selves every day. Gross motor skills—turning, crawling, walking and running—develop side by side with cognitive abilities and the two provide impetus for overall growth. Children need to move, and move freely. They need to challenge themselves in a safe and lovely environment where materials and spaces invite expansion of skill. Teachers provide opportunities to move to music. Our outdoor space sets the stage for walking, running, digging and climbing, across the seasons of the year. It is through daily experience, and inspired spaces, that children move and grow, gain confidence and a feeling of accomplishment.


Literature

Literature provides a cornerstone to your child’s learning at E+D. Research tells us that the more words children hear throughout their first months and years of life, the greater their chances of later success in school.

Books, not surprisingly, offer endless pleasure as well as opportunities to expand vocabulary and sequencing. Even the youngest babies can take joy in literature through the sounds of language combined with pictures when read by a loved one. At Explore+Discover children are read to throughout the day both one-on-one and in groups.

The library, in fact, is a central gathering place where children will experience emotional warmth and physical affection around reading and singing, aesthetic pleasure in the sound and sights of books and the basic fun of story and rhyme.


Math

Math is everywhere in our environment and children engage with math concepts from the first year of life as they begin to solve problems, manipulate space and sequence materials. We encourage mathematical thinking by providing nesting blocks, unit and small hollow blocks, shape sorters, puzzles and other items. During your child’s time at Explore+Discover they will:

  • Manipulate objects such as rattles, blocks, table top manipulatives and puzzles
  • Create rhythm using instruments or blocks
  • Remember an object is present even when hidden from sight
  • Know that two shapes side by side are separate objects
  • Begin to estimate quantity
  • Line up objects in a row
  • Play games of empty and full
  • Place objects in size order
  • Begin to name an attribute such as color or size
  • Start to develop one-to-one correspondence in which they assign one object one number name in counting (for example when filling a peg board)

Science

E+D classrooms are places of wonder where curiosity, creativity and a spirit of adventure are cultivated in infants and toddlers every day. Our children learn through their senses and are attracted to touch everything they see. At Explore+Discover we bring nature into the classroom every day so that children can experience the beauty of the outdoors, develop a questioning mind and begin to take small steps toward scientific inquiry.

At Explore+Discover your child will:

  • Engage directly with elements from the natural world
  • Care for classroom pets and plants
  • Develop nature vocabulary on subjects such as animals, weather, light and dark
  • Begin to categorize objects (grouping by animal type, color, size)
  • Regularly work with water and begin to understand its properties
  • Mix paint colors
  • Juice fruits and vegetables
  • Bake
  • Experiment with cause and effect
  • Explore textures, sights, sounds, movement, and transformation

Language

At E+D children undergo a miraculous blossoming of language. Babies come into the world with no words, but over the first two years of life their capacity for production explodes. Sometime around the first birthday, our students begin to:

  • Point to what they want, gesture for what they need and realize actions achieve goals
  • Babble and coo interactively
  • Respond to language when they hear it and begin to follow simple familiar one step directions
  • Begin to use single words

As our students move towards two years old they will start to:

  • Use several words together meaningfully ("More milk")
  • Undergo an explosion of single word vocabulary
  • Engage in fleeting cooperative play using language with friends
  • Begin to communicate thoughts, feelings and short stories
  • Remember words to books and songs
